Fly Sheet
When is it too hot for a fly sheet?

My horse was a little sweaty the other day when I took her fly sheet off of her. She was just in the pasture all day. The sheet is white and is supposed to keep her cool and protect her coat. She is really thin skinned and needs a fly sheet, especially with a tail flap because she gets sweet itch too. Fly sprays just don’t help that much. Is it bad for her to be sweating under the fly sheet when she hasn’t been exerting herself? It wasn’t much sweat, not like after riding. Is it normal for a horse to sweat at all in the pasture when not exerting herself? I’ve seen her get a little sweat on her flanks even without the fly sheet.

A proper fly sheet should not be causing a horse to warm up from it, they are built to be breathable.
Chances are, if it’s been very hot – she was just sweating any way. Make sure she has plenty of shade, and keep her cool with regular sponge downs to stop her getting too hot. I wouldn’t stop putting the fly sheet on her, because that’ll just cause her even more stress in this heat.
